Al Azhar 9 Islamic Junior High School was established as a development of Al Azhar 8 Islamic Junior High School in Bekasi. The positive response from the community towards the presence of an Islamic junior high school in the Bekasi area especially in Kemang Pratama made it a top choice for parents seeking quality Islamic education for their children at the time.

In line with its original purpose, Al Azhar 8 Islamic Junior High School accommodated only three parallel classes. However, the growing number of prospective students wishing to attend an Islamic junior high school driven by parentsp increasing awareness of the importance of Islamic education led to greater demand. As a result, in 1999, the leadership ofAl Azhar 8 Islamic Junior High Schoolt and the foundation submitted applications for operational permits for two schools: Al Azhar 8 Islamic Junior High School  and Al Azhar 9 Islamic Junior High School Bekasi.

In 1999,Al Azhar 8 Islamic Junior High School received official approval and began operating in Kemang Pratama, Bekasi, following the issuance of an operational permit from the Regional Office of the Department of Education and Culture of West Java Province, under decree number: 3315/102.1/Kep/OT/1999, dated October 4, 1999.

Ten days later, the establishment permit for Al Azhar 9 Islamic Junior High school was issued through Decree No. 3377/102.1/Kep/OT/1999, dated October 14, 1999, officially granting the Operational License for SMP Islam Al Azhar 9 Bekasi. The school subsequently opened its next class in the 2001/2002 academic year.

In 2004, based on the decision of the National School Accreditation Board under the Department of Education and Culture of Bekasi City, Al Azhar 9 Islamic Junior High School was officially accredited through a letter dated December 13, 2004, receiving a score of 94.95, which qualifies as an A (Excellent) rating, and was granted the status of DISAMAKAN.

In 2008, based on the decision of the National School Accreditation Board (BASN) under the National Department of Education of Bekasi City, Al Azhar 9 Islamic Junior High School was reaccredited through an official decree dated November 25, 2008, achieving a score of 98.95 with an A (Excellent) 

In 2012, based on the decision of the Provincial Accreditation Board (BAP) of West Java, Al Azhar 9 Islamic Junior High School was reaccredited and received an accreditation score of 99 (Excellent).
In its most recent accreditation in 2017, the school successfully maintained its Excellent accreditation status with a score of 96.

In line with the progress of the times, Al Azhar 9 Islamic Junior High School Bekasi continues to strive for excellence by improving the quality of both academic and non academic activities, while consistently innovating through various programs.

Through these continuous efforts, SMP IslamAl Azhar 9 Islamic Junior High School is now well known as an outstanding Islamic school, recognized for its excellence in academics and non academics, and for its commitment to developing the talents of its students.
